UniNet Run First IPv6 Multicast of CanalAVIST Medical Forum on the TEIN2 Network with Asia-Pacific Members 11/09/2008 and 19/09/2008

CanalAVIST Medical Forum aims to provide updated knowledge and information to the ASEAN and Asia-Pacific audience in the field of medicine, specifically in endoscopic diagnosis and treatment. The forum introduces medical practitioners, surgeons and medical students in the region to a new avenue for clinical exchanges and discussions enable collaborations and update the audience with the rapid development of the field of endoscopy.

UniNet and Asian Institute of Technology organize collaboration with TEIN2, TEIN2-JP, Faculty of Medicine of the University Pierre and Marie Curie France, RAP/RENATER, KOREN, MYREN, ASTI Philippines, INHAREN and VINAREN to deliver the forum to a total of 15 participating sites (14 from Asia and France). The 11 September event included lectures from Japan, Korea and France. In Japan, the event was hosted by Kyushu University Hospital Fukuoka and Iwate Medical University Morioka (Japan). From Korea, the lecture was delivered directly from Seoul National University Bundang Hospital Bundang. From the side of France, the lecture was provided by Paul Brosse Hospital, Villejuif. The 19 September session started with a lecture from Kyoto Second Red Cross Hospital (Japan) before a continuous program in Thailand. The continuous program in Thailand was organized and hosted by Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University Siriraj Hospital and Ramathibodi Hospital, Prince Songkla University, and Chiangmai University (Thailand).

High quality DVTS streaming at 30 Mbps of medical lectures over TEIN2 with IPv6 multicast was used for CanalAVIST Medical Forum enabling high quality VDO to respective national research and education networks connecting to TEIN2.  In this event UniNet provided hi-speed information network link to TEIN2 via ThaiREN for the member universities in the Thailand enabling Thai universities to connect with high speed networks with research and education institutions in foreign countries.   With multicast, CanalAVIST forum can distribute just one VDO stream to a large number of receiving sites simultaneously over heterogeneous network conditions by deploying DVrelay and VClass developed by the Internet Education and Research Laboratory (intERLab) of the Asian Institute of Technology.

Prof. Wichan Lertwipatrakul, Director of UniNet said this project improves Thai education to be comparable to other countries. Apart from developing related knowledge these activities help in capacity-building of UniNet and its members staff that lead to development of high efficiency distance learning. The forum will benefit medical experts and students to share their expertise and build their networks. Participants will be able to apply the knowledge with their learning, teaching, and research. It also a starting point of collaboration among Asia-Pacific research and education community members, including consolidating and sharing new technology to support and develop further education and research activities said UniNet director.
